The SRC elections in 2018 were weakened by the lack of candidates
which meant there were few votes or interest by students which allowed for
multiple positions in the SRC to be won by Default. Given the nature of the election
it was expected for the SRC to make an impact on the students to validate their
selection but since the coronation, it appears the students are still clueless about
those who represent them.
20 students participated in a random YES/NO survey of whether they knew of the inauguration and more than half answered no. A chart depicting the results of the survey can be found here "https://www.meta-chart.com/share/students-asked-whether-they-knew-about-the-inauguration". Buhle Khubeka, 3rd Year student, said "the only reason i know about the inauguration is because i have friends who are in the SRC and was personally invited." it is said that the event was meant to be intimate and for family members and board members alike but Katlego Maema believes that the students should know about the event and should be given the opportunity to attend."
The 2019 SRC inauguration went accordingly allowing for the SRC to host a "Welcome Back Party" which was a hit among students. "https://www.instagram.com/p/Buk2-fsjFoQ/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link"
The SRC have proven to be able to capture students via their recreational activities but it is important to deliver on the Academia as well. The SRC have had a good start to the year and are yet to prove themselves on the more serious side of things if they want be remembered for more than the parties hosted.
